This Excellence at Work Podcast about learning measurement features Steve Lange, General Manager of the Metrics That Matter business unit at Explorance, discussing the L&D value curve with Michael Rochelle, Chief Strategy Officer and Principal HCM Analyst at Brandon Hall Group™. Lange makes the case for building an evidence system that connects activity data to business outcomes, giving L&D the information it needs to decide what to invest in, scale or stop.
Lange walks through why many organizations stall in the early stages of the value curve, reporting on training delivery and completion numbers without linking that activity to results. He calls this the “so what, now what” test: a team that trains 53,000 people means little to stakeholders unless it can also show cost, efficiency and outcome data tied to a business goal.
The podcast includes a detailed example from a client leadership development program called Growing Effective Leaders, which built success measures into the program from the start, avoiding a scramble to explain results after the fact. Participants in that program were promoted and retained at roughly ten times the rate of external hires, and the program was later expanded to reach more of the organization’s talent pipeline.
