HCMx Radio 44: General Electric’s Successful Social Learning Community

Guest: Chantelle Nash, Program Manager, Digital Learning and Engagement, General Electric

Host: Rachel Cooke, Chief Operating Officer, Brandon Hall Group

Social learning is where learners connect with each other and create and share content using tools such as blogs, wikis, and other collaborative tools.  Brandon Hall Group’s 2016 research revealed that social/collaborative learning tools were a top priority for organizations. There are some great companies, like GE, that are on the forefront of this journey. GE’s Crotonville Digital Learning Team created a learning and knowledge sharing community – called “Smartbits” – on GE’s internal social-collaborative platform. The purpose is to drive demand, engagement, and cultural change. Earlier this year GE submitted its solution to Brandon Hall Group’s HCM Excellence Awards Program. Our judges proudly awarded GE with Gold for Best Use of Social/Collaborative Learning.

In this HCMx Radio episode, Chantelle Nash from GE shares the key motives for developing this type of social community, details around the design and uniqueness of their approach, and techniques that led to great success and engagement.

Chantelle has seven years of experience in global L&D, encompassing training design and development, communications, project management, social leadership and community management. Her primary focus is extending Crotonville’s reach and impact through the management of various digital learning products, marketing, and change management, including supporting GE’s new, company-wide performance development approach. Chantelle is responsible for building membership and engagement on Crotonville’s internal social page to promote continuous learning and informal knowledge-sharing across a global target group of 170,000+ users.
