Creating Content to Attract the Modern Learner

You probably touch on at least some type of learning resource more frequently than you think, but at the same time, not as often or as easily as you might like. Brandon Hall Group asked organizations how often they expect employees to connect with learning to be effective at their job, and 38% said weekly and  18% said daily or more often. 56% percent of companies believe that people should connect to learning at least weekly to be effective.

Traditional learning models, platforms and classrooms make this nearly impossible. You can’t have people attending a 60-90 minute class once a week, let alone daily, yet most content is built to meet this kind of need.  And for all the capabilities of today’s learning management systems, they can only deliver the content that’s available, which is typically big and unwieldy.

Needless to say, this is not going to meet the needs of the modern learner. Instead, companies need to re-think how they approach learning.

Michael and Leslie will tell you, among other things, that it’s time to step away from relying on courses and look at breaking learning down in to meaningful, bite-sized, and reusable pieces. Once you do this, there are suddenly vast new opportunities to deliver learning in new ways. However, most of today’s LMS platforms are not built to manage this type of learning.

Enter the learning content management system. The LCMS is a platform that lets you create smaller, chunked content, configure it, and deliver it in whichever way best suits the need at hand. If something needs to be fixed or updated, you no longer have to tear down an entire course and build it back up again. The specific item can be changed and incorporated back wherever it is needed. This gives learning the opportunity to move at the same speed as the business.

The key is that even with the cloud, social learning capabilities and mobile delivery, most learning technology platforms are not flexible enough to allow for continuous, embedded learning. They are part of the reason many employees see learning as something separate from their job – an event that takes them away from what they are “supposed to be doing.”
