Driving Value with Sustainable Learning Content

Much of the enterprise learning conversation is focused on the learner experience. For the most part, this is a positive thing. It has gotten us light-years from when we were just focused on making things easier for admins. But the thing that seems to get lost in the conversation is content.

In the end, content will drive everything. Organizations should take a good hard look at their content strategies. For many organizations, there is simply too much out-of-date, irrelevant content that is still being housed and managed, making it increasingly more difficult for learners to find and get what they need. And if 2020 has shown us anything, an organization’s needs can and will undergo large scale, rapid change. These kind of business changes can render huge swaths of content obsolete overnight.

Given the amount of time and effort that goes into creating great content, it is surprising how often it is forgotten about once it is created. Content accounts for one-quarter of the L&D budget on average, so it only makes sense to nurture that investment. Nearly one-third of companies in Brandon Hall Group’s 2020 Learning Strategy Study cited a lack of effective content as a key challenge to executing the learning strategy. A solid content management strategy is one way to address these issues and more.

The right content strategy includes methods to maintain, improve, update, and revise current content. This makes learning more resilient and able to react and adapt more quickly when business needs change. It also helps ensure better compliance outcomes by making sure the content available is current and relevant. And ultimately, it reduces the amount of rework required to replace older material.

By centralizing learning-content strategy and its processes, these inefficiencies can be greatly reduced. If everyone has insight into the content and individual elements that exist, content can be created much more quickly and actually updated, rather than left to be rot. This approach to content can really boost the ROI of learning by maximizing efficiencies and extending the shelf life of existing content.

Brandon Hall Group Smartchoice Bronze Preferred Provider DelphianLogic created their ContentCentral tool to specifically address these issues, providing a content solution that is uniquely agnostic to whatever authoring tools, LMS, or LXP and organization may be using. ContentCentral can help shine a light on and clean up an area of the learning ecosystem where many organizations have a complete blind spot.
