Current State
In Brandon Hall Group’s Culture Eats Strategy Study, 68% of organizations indicated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the current employee experience. Most (56%) are only surveying employees annually or twice a year. The 2024 HCM Outlook study shows that improving the employee work experience is the top people strategy for organizations in 2024.
Complexities
All of these measures are strong indicators of the level of engagement of the employees for any organization.
Consequences
Organizations believe there are many areas to shore up to improve talent retention, ranging from career development to compensation, leadership, employee recognition, work-life balance and more. Many of these areas are interrelated and should not be looked at individually. For example, managers and leaders are integral to career development, employee recognition, the success of hybrid work policies and creation of learning opportunities.
Critical Questions
- Do you have a deep understanding of the everyday experiences employees at all levels in the organization have at work?
- Does your workplace culture foster positive everyday employee experiences?
- Does your organization have strategies to impact how employees experience the organization, such as leadership development and career development?
Brandon Hall Group™ POV
Each employee has unique experiences and viewpoints about an organization, so understanding the impact of those experiences on an employee’s approach to their jobs can be challenging. To positively impact the employee experience, we recommend the following:
Be Intentional
HR teams must have multiple plans of action for building and maintaining a collaborative and supportive culture. This single element consistently ranks highest among attributes that contribute to a positive employee experience. Ensuring a culture remains collaborative and supportive requires intention on the part of all involved.
Leverage AI to Analyze All Available Data
The standard recommendation is to survey employees frequently. That can lead to survey fatigue, however, which can impact the number of responses and engagement. Many organizations have a lot of data – including from Glassdoor, Indeed, learning feedback, onboarding surveys, exit and stay interviews, internet usage, email communications, performance and productivity data, and everything in between. Seek out AI-driven technology that can help you aggregate all of that data to generate insights in the form of sentiment analysis and projections about the employee experience.
Consider Employees in Every Decision
Always remember that the employee experience is ultimately an outcome of many different factors. As such, it should be a filter on every decision being made in the business. “How will this affect our employees?” is a question leaders should include in any decision-making effort.
